SONAXIS

Comissioned intervention in the collections and history of the Ethnographic Museum of  Stockholm, Sweden, 8 May > 6 June, 2021.

SonAxis is an artistic installation and intervention in The Mission exhibition, in the foundational collections, and the founding history of The Museum of Ethnography. But most of all, an intervention in the here and now. The art work is tracking and listening to the colonizers, ethnographers, and missionaries, who were guided by Christianity and Science. Retracing their footsteps to Northern European modernism, its cultural heritage, and constructions of whiteness. The mission heard as a movement born of trauma at home. As involuntary victims of the dark side of the Enlightenment, industrialism, and the Christian conversion they spawned fantasies about The Congo as a lost paradise, and the Scandinavian as the heroic Viking reborn. A mission to exterminate poverty, slavery, identified through heathenry and the vice of infidels — a journey between Heaven and hell. A struggle to make a new art of engineering bear witness to modernism’s civilising canon. A movement of ambiguity,  often naive and blind to racist structures at the core of colonialism, in its ambition to do good. And in particular the interna racist structures of christianity. But also a movement at the absolute front line of  racial friction, and thus first hand whitnesses to anti colonial struggles.
